2-The ethno geographic tour of Aleppo region

This tour covers the eastern region, one of the 9 regions which compose Aleppo's province. The tour presents a land and its people and the formulation between the two .Although this region is the least developed region - with its location on the boundary of the desert -it receives less than 300mm of rain .These bitter living conditions have evolved-as like in the desert- a set of technique and harmony with the environment , this is to be seen in the local means of construction on one hand and a set of tradition of warm hospitality ,generousity on the second .The main point of interest is:

Village of Beehive Houses

Summer is the usual season of the construction of these houses. An ancient building, based on a very simple design. During the tour we will be invited to have a tea by a family.During which we get an idia about the social life of the villagers, multi wives and numerous children are a common thing. The tatoo is common among the eldery woman,as are their very brightly coloured scarves. The people of this semi arid desert are very generous and hospitable."I've met the second most friendly and generous people in my life after the ones of Nepal "said an Australian tourist .

3-Join the dead cities tour

The dead cities are mysterious phenomena that consist of 700 towns scattered around the region between Aleppo & Antakia. This region, which is the cradle of the Christianity, became rich during the Byzantine era thanks to earlier Roman peace( pax romana ) and to the mass production of oil and wine which was exported all over the Byzantine world. Sadly, this region lost its prosperity & fell dramatically into ruins because of: 1-security problems (the Persian invasion -the crusaders) 2- earthquakes 3- the Ottoman policy which changed systematically the ethnic & religious face of this region. The tour itinerary is a loop where the participants explore different sides of the region Things to see:
1-The dead city Khrabe shamass: 32 km north of Aleppo .this is a a typical dead city, the name Shamass( sun) indicates the existence of a temple for the god the sun . The site dates back to the 4th & 5th centuries and contains ruins of roman temples, houses, two churches, winepresses and oil reservoirs.
2-St Simon: includes the biggest cathedral in the Mid. East. The Byzantine masterpiece was built in the 5th century to honor St Simon who spent his last 42 years on the top of a pillar preaching his students in demonstration of his detachment to the world & his connection with God. The site became a Mecca for Christians.it was imitated in Europe three centuries later.
3-The valley of death at Qatura: was a cemetery for the nearby flourishing town. A series of tombs date back to the 2nd century AD. The tombs are cut into the rock & are carved with figures representing those who rest there, plus Greek & Latin inscriptions naming & asking mercy for them. Later Christians took refuge here, practicing three new faiths away from Roman persecution. Although Jesus Christ was born in Bait laham, the name Christian was used here for the first time in history and attributed to his followers. The visit to these tombs gives an idea of the bitter conditions of the early Christians, which St Simon wanted to bring back to mind.
4- the Basilica of Muchabk: 27 km north west of Aleppo this primitive-style chapel goes back to the 5th century & is a reminder that the first church in the world was probably built in this region.
